12:00 – Gene Expression Decoding of Imaging-derived Phenotypes with Applications to Autism
Christine Ecker — Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Goethe-University Frankfurt
Moderator: Miguel Castelo-Branco (CIBIT, University of Coimbra)
Understanding the biological mechanisms underlying neuroimaging-derived phenotypes is a central challenge in neuroscience. Recent advances in imaging transcriptomics provide powerful tools to link macroscale brain structure and function to underlying gene expression patterns. In this talk, Christine Ecker will introduce approaches for gene expression decoding of imaging-derived features—such as cortical thickness, surface area, and connectivity profiles—using spatial transcriptomic resources like the Allen Human Brain Atlas. Methodological advances in mapping imaging phenotypes onto gene co-expression networks and cellular signatures will be highlighted, with discussion on applying these approaches to stratify heterogeneity in autism spectrum conditions. Finally, the integration of imaging, genetics, and transcriptomics will be outlined, providing novel insights into neurodevelopmental diversity and informing precision psychiatry.
