Introduction

This edited volume emerges from the LASI Research Summit and brings together cutting-edge research across five thematic domains: sustainable and innovative industries; smart cities, energy, and mobility; health and well-being; infrastructure and connectivity; and public administration and governance. Collectively, these chapters illustrate how artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and intelligent systems are being leveraged to design and implement impactful solutions across a range of sectors, including education, healthcare, urban planning, and policymaking. More than a technical exploration, this book is a call to reimagine the role of digital innovation in advancing the public good. Through real-world case studies, methodological insights, and cross-sectoral collaborations, the volume amplifies the work of LASI researchers and highlights the transformative potential of technology when guided by principles of equity, sustainability, and social responsibility. By fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue and practical knowledge-sharing, this volume aims to support the responsible adoption of AI-powered systems, encourage policy innovation, and strengthen ties between academia, industry, and public institutions. We invite contributions that advance this mission, research that not only pushes technological boundaries but also addresses the complex social and environmental dimensions of the digital age.

Objective

This book aims to serve as a comprehensive, interdisciplinary resource that explores how digital transformation, driven by AI, data science, and intelligent systems, can be harnessed to promote sustainability and social impact. It seeks to bridge technological innovation with societal needs by showcasing applied research, real-world implementations, and conceptual frameworks that inform the development of responsible, scalable, and inclusive digital solutions. While much of the existing literature focuses on the technical capabilities of AI and data-driven systems, this volume emphasizes their application within broader social, environmental, and governance contexts. By doing so, it contributes to an emerging body of research that critically examines the intersection of digital innovation and societal transformation.

Target Audience

The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of digital transformation across a wide range of disciplines, including artificial intelligence, data science, sustainability studies, urban planning, public administration, health informatics, and information systems. It will also appeal to those in applied fields such as education, governance, energy, and mobility, where technology-driven innovation is increasingly central to development and service delivery. Moreover, the book will provide valuable insights for executives, policymakers, and organizational leaders concerned with the strategic implementation of intelligent systems, the ethical management of data and digital infrastructure, and the pursuit of sustainable, inclusive innovation. Whether operating in public institutions, private enterprises, academic settings, or non-governmental organizations, readers will benefit from the book’s interdisciplinary perspective and real-world applications aimed at fostering systemic change through digital technologies.
